.. _tutorial-aza: AZA Module =========== The AZA (Allocated Zones for Aquaculture - FAO, 2012) module implemented a spatially explicit Multi-Criteria methodology, namely SMCE (Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation) for identifying AZAs, i.e. marine areas where the development of aquaculture is prior to other uses. The SMCE applied for the AZA module can be carried out following the framework developed in Brigolin et al. (2017; Figure 2) throughout three steps: i) criteria normalization; ii) weight assignment to each criterion; iii) suitability index calculation (see Radiarta et al., 2008). All the criteria to run the AZA module, together with the weights and the constraints, are in the PORTODIMARE geoportal and are available for the users. In order to run the Module AZA, the user should click on Case Studies and, subsequently on Module AZA. A dedicated case study for the AZA module was developed and run for the Emilia Romagna region applying the instruction are reported in the following paragraph. Emilia-Romagna case study -------------------------- The input data (Figures 2, 3 and 4) of the AZA module for the specific case study were: 1. Optimal growth models' outputs: a. Mussels-days to market size 5 cm 2. Economic factors: b. Distance to harbour; c. Significant wave height. 3. Environment interactions: d. Extent of sediment organic enrichment due to shellfish farms; 4. Weights. 5. Constraints: Polygon shapefile of constraints are superimposed in the final suitability maps by using a Boolean classification scheme (suitable areas 1, unsuitable areas 0). In order to run the AZA module, the user should upload at least two shapefiles. Both can be searched directly in the "Filters" box (i.e.: searching by text, categories, domain area, etc…), otherwise can be selected choosing directly from the whole list of available datasets. .. figure:: img/AZA_create_new_analysis.png :alt: Create a new AZA analysis :align: center :name: aza-create-new-analysis Create a new AZA analysis First of all, the user has to select the criteria and assign a weight with a value comprised between 0 to 1, where values close to 1 indicate the highest suitability. The sum of the weights given to the criteria must be equal to one, if this condition is not achieved the user will receive the following error message: "WARNING: the sum of the criteria must be equal to 1!". In the application showed, to create a new AZA analysis, the AZA module was run for the Greece area and three criteria were used: (i) optimal growth, expressed in terms of the days required by seabass to reach the commercial size of 350 g; (ii) distance to harbour, representing the distance between the centroids of each pixel and the nearest port; (iii) significant wave height, representing the 90th percentile of the significant wave height. .. figure:: img/AZA_criteria_weights_assigned.png :alt: Criteria selected to run the AZA module and the weights assigned :align: center :name: aza-criteria-weights-assigned Criteria selected to run the AZA module and the weights assigned A weight has to be assigned by the user to each criterion, in this case we selected 0.6 to the seabass growth, 0.2 to the distance to harbour and 0.2 to the significant wave height. After the criteria selection, the user has to select the actual use and constraints at sea for the AZA implementation, at least two shapefiles. In the following figure the national marine protected areas, the underwater cables around Kephalonia island and the Posidonia meadows distribution.
