Spatial distribution of wind speed: annual mean value (and Autumn, sping, summer, winter mean value)

Abstract

Wind speed Uw (horizontal wind speed at 10m height above the sea surface) is the considered parameter. Mean wind speed contours are at the locus of sites where the annual and seasonal mean values of wind speed is constant. This constant value (in m/s) is depicted on each contour. Seasonal resolution: annual – all months; autumn – September, October, November; winter – December, January, February; spring – March, April, Mat; summer – June, July, August.Data are extracted by the Wind and Wave Atlas of the Mediterranean Sea. The atlas is the result of the Medatlas project led between 1999 and 2004 by a consortia of six partners (NTU - Greece, CS SI – France, ISMAR-CNR – Italy, Thetis – Italy, Semantic TS – France, Meteo France – France) and that was funded by the former Western European Union – WEAO Research Cell. The main objective of the atlas was to provide reliable long term wind and wave statistics at specified points of the Mediterranean Sea (at about 50 km intervals) and to provide derived maps of main parameters distribution. Wind and wave statistics and maps were produced by model data provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF, Reading, UK); model data were retrieved for the period June 1992 – June 2002. Wind speed, wave height and wave period model data were calibrated through satellite data (in particular those acquired by: Topex altimeter, ERS1-2 altimeter, ERS1-2 scatterometer)
